Forlorn Chambers: Unborn and hollow
11/03/13 || Ironpants
This is a 3-track demo CD, and is delivered in a cardboard casing and you can get yours from their Facebook page for a smacking 2 Euros. Nice huh? Enough of this commercial chit-chat.
As I have mentioned earlier, Finland, the land of thousand lakes and bands, is squirting out bands like there’s no tomorrow. And very seldom do they sound like shit, or “paska” as they would call it. They are the current rulers of releasing good sounding music, the demo department included. Luxuries I tell you, in my youth we gathered in an old walk in closet, crammed in together with a 4-track portable studio and one overhead mic for the crappy drum set. Amongst these storage boxes and old hidden porno mags and defunct dildos from Kevin’s mom, we recorded awesomeness…at least we thought we did. This demo is of course a good sounding production, and everything is where it should be, so lets concentrate on the music presented. For the fun of it, I’ll give you a walk through just because I can.
The first song “Unborn and hollow” rushes
out full on death grind that gives it a somewhat black metal song
structure and is a fast piece regarding death metal standard. The song
slows down at the end though into some kind of chorus repeating it self
for the rest of the song.
Second track “And we hail the ones who fall”
follows the same full on death grind set in song number one, but fairly
soon you get some moody riff that gives you the traditional Finnish
sound, before running away again with some double bass drumming. The
chorus presents some man-choirs that gives it a nice touch.
Third song “Desolate resolution” is the best
one in my opinion, it’s slower in comparison with the first two songs,
and they gather some cred in my house by doing so. It also contains some
nifty bass work and I actually was a bit impressed by that part. You
get some progressive shit going on there around 1:30 in the song, well
done.
What’s the letdown then? Well, here it comes. The singer is no good, you get a monotone “wet” growl flowing in the same tone through all the songs, almost like a low “pig squeal”, and it got me really annoyed. I got no facts to go with this demo, and I cant find any info about the band members from their Facebook page or any of the other pages they are listed on, so, I hope that the singer is also playing one of the instruments? If that’s the case you can fix this problem by hiring another vocalist without creating too much turmoil in the band.
Nothing new here, and not really bad either. Song number three was a killer though.
